Roman Phalera with Gorgon, Very Rare, 2nd Cent.
Copper alloy, 55mm sq & 1mm thick/9.9gm
Obv/ image of Gorgon facing, within lined and dotted border. Small hole @ 8 o'clock, missing bottom right corner.
Rev/ vestiges of original dirt and all four rivets.
Con/ sound and cleaned with green patina.
Our phalera may have been attached to a sword scabbard or may have been attached to an armor cuirass. Either way, this is a one-of-a-kind collecting Roman military artifact. You will never see another exactly like ours.
That such very thin artifacts, lost in fields that have been plowed for nearly 1700 years and still remains for us to enjoy, in such superb and un-bent condition, is amazing!
