Brooch, Pannonian Anchor with Bird decoration, Museum Quality

Ave!

Pannonian Anchor Fibula with bird decoration on the bow. ca. 100-175 AD

Copper alloy; 48mm/34.3gm

Dark green patina with brassy high-lights, no missing pieces and pin intact.

In later examples, the bird decoration is often stylized or degenerated.  Ours is obviously an early and high quality example with a very realistic bird.  The knobs at the end of the spring cover (which are meant to cover the rivets that hold the cover in place) are just abstract.  But we think that they could be puppy dogs, but this has never been mentioned in any sources. What do you think? ;-)

Stylized 'puppies' or not, this is a very rare fibula and is in Museum Quality condition. Don't forget to click the 'images' tab more details!
