Ave!

Thrace, Chersonesos City Issue, Apollo & Artemis c. 212 AD

Æ 21mm/5.5gm

Con/ a VF for the issue, thick dark green/near black patina with glossy fields.

Obv/ Bust of Apollo r.; XEP (= Cherson) before, star behind.

Rev/ Artemis in war-like attitude r., armed with spear; at feet, stag l.; magistrate's name about.

Ref/ Anokhin 'Coinage of Chersonese', 287 var.

Seller's Note/ By the beginning of the 3rd Cent. AD, the city of Cherson (Crimean Peninsula) had become a bit of a back-water, although still loosely under the rule of Rome and their coinage had greatly denigrated in style from the 'glory days' in the 3rd Cent BC. This is a very rare and very collectable issue that you won't find on Wildwinds or any other common resource.
